Gabu

So I just went back and re-read the relevant section of chapter 97 where the wealth cube and platinum was discussed. It's never directly stated that the Nexus "produces" metals that exceeds the adjacent realms, although it's somewhat hinted at. But I think it's critical to remember this is all coming from the perspective of Thacea who is providing the info second hand. Remember the Nexus is not above spreading propaganda, and even things that are considered facts about the Nexus by the various realms can not be assumed to actually be true. What is true, is that the Nexus has a wealth of metals both precious and mundane, and they attribute this wealth to two sources, the "ever expanding far lands" and something called "pinnacle transmutation". The former is questionable, while the later implies a likely large expenditure of magic. Presumably so large that "lesser realms" can't afford to spend that amount of magic. As for the "far lands" this if anything reinforces the idea that the Nexus is a pocket dimension. They need a constant influx of magic in order to keep expanding. It's likely they can't afford to produce ALL their metals using transmutation as the magic expenditure wouldn't be sustainable, so there would still be value in siphoning resources from other realms.

Ultimatecalibur

Gabu. The Nexus produces metals (even nonmagical variations) at a rate that far exceeds all of the adjacent realms production capabilities which causes those materials to be devalued in the other realms. Nexus doesn't need to import materials and most adjacent realms can not actually refine metals like platinum.

Gabu

Because even without mana a realm has resources. Remember the discussion about the wealth cube? Raw precious metals without the special Nexian seal are considered almost worthless and I guarantee part of getting that seal is a tithe. So a realm exports 100 lbs. of "worthless" platinum to the Nexus to be minted, and the Nexus sends back 90 pounds of minted platinum coins. Bam, the Nexus just made 10 pounds of platinum out of nothing.

Steve Desamos

still, once they realize the manaless machine can do that sort of thing on its own, they're going to have a very interesting conversation about computers. Good thing the EVI isn't fully sentient with a personality

Michael Halpern

probably just a couple clarifications

architectural engineer

This was an especially good chapter! I really cannot wait for the next chapter! I think I must have reread this chapter somewhere between five and ten time's! I can't imagine the rewrite will have changed much, this is such a good chapter!

Michael Halpern

i suspect it's a paper wall on the black board

Google Google

Is she writing down on the blackboard.?

Steve

Do we know her jet pack is fuel powered? I doubt there would be space in her boxes for fuel or a means to synthesise fuel. They're most likely electron thrusters or something similar.

Michael Halpern

IIRC the next day will be Artricord, given Artricord's attempt to find commonality with Emma landing on the sanctity of free will and sapience, i suspect a certain elephant in the room will come up soon.

Thunder

People can speak whatever language they want Skrzynek.

Thunder

There's a phrase in writing called "Kill your darlings" this doesn't refer to characters but rather moments or scenes that don't actually serve to further the plot or add anything in characterisation. Most novels have a word count roughly in the 90k range, this series already massively outstrips such a work and is nowhere near completion. Now this isn't in the medium of a novel so you don't necessarily have to be concerned with word count but the pacing is also affected by such things.

Google Google

Something popped in my head which I find it amusing. When Emma is writing the first thing that pops in my head is the 24 caprices

Legijas

An air breathing arc or radio jet seems most likely

ghost01173430

This is not fanfiction. It's a new novel story

A B

Yeah. This is the joy of Chekhov’s crates ….. it’s totally in crate 31337

Michael Halpern

she probably has a ready made flight pack,

Michael Halpern

Chiska already stated "inate abilities," such as flight were coming up

Michael Halpern

its a ballpoint. at least what was used in the store was, this was also probably a ballpoint but could be the fountain pen

Aero Cookie

Maybe Ilunor finally going to ask for that pen from Emma after seeing it in action. He was looking for just that at the pen store after all

Harrison Suderman

Very small edit as far as spacing for the words, "... especially as that mindless beast shot me a dismissive glare." There are two spaces before the last word.

Michael Halpern

if mana comes from the sky or at least appears to, given how similar it is to the aura borealis i suspect that its really something that's getting entrained in a magnetic field, but that could come from anywhere

Michael Halpern

its probably a jet of some kind, just mostly electrically powered, better range in atmosphere edit the funny part is the sonic boom, and mach cone, and the questions about that.

Ragnar Pendon

I'm sorry, but have you ever considered glorious Papyrus?

Marshel Helsper

I had similar thought. Her suit uses rockets (maybe not liquid fuel ones), so I imagine the gang might wonder how fast she is actually going to go. They know that rockets are stupid fast. I also imagine that in PE Thacea might be praised as "being the fastest natural flyer of all realms" and her getting real uncomfortable about that.

Michael Halpern

... itd be funny if Emma "accidentally" reaches mach 1.1...

Michael Halpern

well most of the fighting is done with drones of various shapes and sizes, the point of putting a soldier on the field is to provide local command for said drones or to carry out special operations- we don't trust full lethal autonomy to our machines

Michael Halpern

there was no dripping, though the sariffs would be faster with a fountain pen, i assumed ballpoint as that would be a great advertisement for her planned business venture. The handbook said they have to BUY materials and supplies from Elaseer, not that they couldn't also use supplies from home.

Google Google

🤔 that's a really good question was she using her ballpoint pen? In her class.

Google Google

Discount cobal :What do you mean Emma it's just drawing?!?! You created the most complicated script in the world without using any magical pen what kind of artifest are you using?! Emma: -_- ................ My armor. Discount cobal. exe not working:!¬¤|Г¤Г:#÷+€"

Google Google

When was the last time that a fanfiction was written down like this. Let's be honest to each other the perspective of a Noble student seeing technology for the first time not understanding that this is not Magic and the best part is there are actually explanations on how is it going for us and for them in the buck they don't understand a thing about technology. but it's simply it's the best thing in the world. Sorry for my grammar if you know what I mean

Michael Halpern

Apprentice Larial

Michael Halpern

I mean the gang already knows that the armor helped in PE, in a way, this is just an extension of that

Skrzynek

I have a Glossary I've been working on, but it needs bug updates with latest chapters and lore... Despite already being 80+ pages long. I'll... Get to it eventually.

Noah Hamlen

I'm totally with you. I still look forward to reading every week but I find myself less and less interested. I want to see plot progression and inter-system conflict, not slice of life stuff in a cynical Hogwarts for its own sake

Skrzynek

While going straight to flight lesson on second class feels kinda out of order, I can see the Dean telling Chiska to do "WHATEVER IT TAKES TO HUMILIATE THE NEWREALMER". Which, given her lack of flight capability so far, might mean the jetpack. It would also be a great show of the tech before the dragon quest too!

Skrzynek

Actually, was it stated whether she used Earth pen, or the non-magical fountain pen she bought in Elaseer? I was under the impression of it being ambiguous.

Skrzynek

I wonder if we are gonna get the gang talking about Emma's armor moving on it's own THE VERY NEXT CHAPTER! After all, they know she doesn't speak High Nexian, so how could she write it if she was controlling the hand? It must the armor doing it's own thing! :D Oh I am giddy for the next one!

Skrzynek

I have written a rather long comment under those complaints you reference under this very chapter, but let me give a concise response with my thoughts to you as well - while the minutia of worldbuilding and learning those characters is quite fun in it's own right, it's the BALANCE between this and action / main plot that makes the story "drag". I am not saying to "skip all of this", but to have Emma advance the story and reinforce Earth's awesomeness with more than just *talking*. We could have a lot of cool little worldbuilding details *in between* events that make our blood pumping, not *instead of them.* This chapter is actually perfect example of this. We have the student drama, the worldbuilding about mana, Emma being a lazy goober, and also a VERY COOL FLEX based on her power armor/ tech! Best of all, a flex in a situation that was supposed to humiliate her! In other words, we got Emma using her *Power Armor in a Magic School setting.* Guys... I think JCB simply has to write what's in the story's title and we'll be all happy here with no complaints! :v

Skrzynek

JCB fell into an exposition hole that is true. While I enjoy the exposition immensely, I myself felt quite disappointed we didn't get to see ANY confrontation in Elaseer, even outside the ambassadorial district. Would be a perfect place to insert some action, have Emma beat up a thief or thug, but no. Words and words. Though it is not the presence of politics and minute worldbuilding details that grates me, it's the proportions of it to action. Last kind of satisfactory "action", besides this very chapter (YAY for robot-hands!) was the one chapter of house choosing show (ch. 109) and before that we had the physical education (ch. 89-92). Previous to that, ch. 76/77 when Thalmin almost got drowned, and 71 when Emma shot the firebird... Aaand the next action part is indeed the crate stuff. Sure, there were moments of "main plot" like the magical mixer, malicious compliance talk with the dean, and spying on Larial/Sorecar, but those were enthralling politics, not sure if "action". In all of 117 chapters, we still did not get to see the railgun and laser cutter in action, despite JCB advertising them in the story description on Royal Road. It is one thing to not mention it *ever*, but another to hang almost literal checkov's gun on the wall, and have us stare at it for so long. Setup takes a long-ass time to resolve, which is a downside with this style of writing. A natural trade-off, choosing detail over expediency. All of that said, while I have my testosterone-fueled needs for Emma to use the Power that comes with her Power Armor, it has been getting better. The second Earth presentation was made shorter and way more dynamic than the first one. This last chapter actually had Emma flex her tech, even if the biggest flex (sleeping in class) is not know to anyone but her, EVI and us. Oh and while a regular in-universe day has an average length of 8.85 chapters, this Monday-equivalent so far took just 2 chapters, and if nothing too crazy happens in the evening - it could stay at a low number like 3-4. I am quite hopeful here that JCB will make more and more time skips, not to mention him improving as a writer along the way. I don't think we will wait long at all for the dragon quest, and afterwards - events will likely speed up further. Unless we get another presentation, of course. But those are a joy in their own right, even if they don't push the plot forward.

Skrzynek

Why do you write in a language we don't speak here, Diego?

Skrzynek

What? Lord Lartia? Apprentice Larial? Her golem Lortal? Alaroy Rital, the author whose books Ilunor burned within the Library? WHICH ONE DO YOU MEAN?! (JCB has so many similar names that a typo can make your comment really ambiguous...)

Malva

People have been complaining that the chapters drag on, and that is true. But maybe it's better this way, I mean, would we be better off having skipped all of this and heading straight to Amethyst Dragon 20, 30, 40 chapters ago? This medium is unique in that it can drag on even longer than books, and I for one like it. As a writer I'd feel less pressured writing like Jcb does, and we get to explore more cool stuff. Will we ever see the end of the school year? Probably not, but that's not what matters right now.

Casualscifienjoyer

Agreed while having the inner politics of three different peer groups is interesting it’s completely unnecessary and won’t provide any meaningful value. Aka actions speak louder than words and we’ve gotten a hell of a lot of words in the past couple dozen chapters.

A B

Pretty sure there is a ghost in the machine scene where dudes fingers split open and he had 40 fingers typing on a keyboard

Diego Alonzo Ochochoque

nadie tendría duda de que es una araña en ese momento

Nicole

Had the exact same thought

Marshel Helsper

That could be. The first candidate melted, so oh that's unfortunate, maybe real low mana then. Second candidate in an armored suit and no mana to speak of. Ah, maybe a bit tricky.

Marshel Helsper

"Guys, it's just drawing."

Michael Halpern

Well you see the very idea that a new realm let alone one with so little mana could be a peer is inconceivable,

Michael Dale Vereen

i wonder how long before Thacea finds the armor doing something around their quarters, only for Emma to still be in the tent having sent the armor out on autopilot.

trebor

I second this reply

Steve

They really do love putting her on a pedestal and shooting themselves in the foot

Marsy

"This was done by a newrealmer, A NEWREALMER, so I don't want to hear ANY excuses about your penmanship, is that clear?!"

Coffee TheFreshmaker

Maybe that's why they tried to burn all knowledge of it. They might not have known before the first candidate, since such a realm should not exist according to them

Michael Halpern

it was probably a paper sheet on the blackboard

Michael Halpern

larital

Ragnar Pendon

I think it's also a joke about the first week being a year long IRL

SoylentPudding

I'm now kinda hoping for a plot arc where everyone decides the reason earthrealm is so weird and has such strange social conventions is cuz they're an insect hive mind or something.

SoylentPudding

Is the indisposed party Rila or Mal'tory?

JAEffler

I'm I the only one that half expected each one of the fingers of Emma's gauntlet to hold a pen and start writing as a group like some kind of spider?

Anton

I enjoy the chapter as always, but can't help feel that the story has been getting drawn out and bogged down in unnecessary detail and flowery prose for a while now. Basically nothing happened here and I'd like to see more of the main plot. More happened in the first forty chapters that got me hooked than the remaining eighthy combined.

Malcolm Morrison

I think Emma was asleep the whole class and couldn’t get points while unconscious.

Leon

I would now like a scene where Emma via EVI writes in High Nexian two different assignments in front of everyone - one with her right hand, the other with her left. Please, thank you.

Michael Halpern

And she did it with a munane (ballpoint) pen.

Tazeell

This was a fun chapter. Evi really pulling a lot of weight carrying the mission this time! I still eagerly awaiting the group discovering Evi

Raz

Real

I Dare Korval

Emma and the others "Refusing to compete in the accumulation of points". Serious red flag here, as we all know trying to avoid something invariable results in the opposite. Like staying quite until they end up taking down the Amethyst Dragon and the school finds out and they automatically get 100 points each for the deed.

Michael Halpern

as any programmer worth their salt will tell you...

Brachy LP

"She flies now!" after Hastily Priting out a Custom Made Flighsuite

Kirk Childers

You're technically still in school for that 😅

Marshel Helsper

That complicates thing with Earthrealm. Why invite a candidate at all if the realm can't supply the needed mana?

Timothy Sar

Did the first section casually allude to time magic? Time dialation/acceleration is 1 thing, but if they have localized reversal of entropy that’s worth something!

Marshel Helsper

I mean the ink on the homework. Perfect High Nexus Script on manaless material.

Marshel Helsper

I think they're still going to wonder how she did it. There have been hints that Thacea has seen that the suit isn't as inert as it seems - not just a suit of armor to protect Emma - and that Emma may be smaller than expected for the suit. I wonder how complicated those wrist movements are; though I guess if the Elves can do it....

LumiOak

Pretty goo d for a brick.!"

LumiOak

But its a different teacher's pov, although the transition did feel weird, surprising.

Gabu

I still think the Nexus is a pocket dimension. My personal theory is that the entire reason the Nexus is going around finding "adjacent realms" is because they're secretly siphoning part of the mana from each one. They need to constantly find more dimensions in order to keep increasing their mana supply.

architectural engineer

i finished reading and was sad its over for a week XD i can't wait that long! great story! loved it! the wait till next week will be excruciating!!

RlyNeedCoffee

Given that Thacea and Thalmin know that Emma can't actually speak High Nexian, I'm really curious as to what their thoughts are about this demonstrated penmanship. Thalmin seems like he'd be beside himself giggling at the flagrant undermining of the Nexian authority/power. Thacea probably equal parts long-viewed anxiety, mixed with short-term enjoyment of the blasphemy as well.

Destinum

She was offered an enchanted pen, so presumably she used a normal pen instead.

emphes

I thought for a moment there that we were jumping back in time to the first period again, and EVI was responding for Emma while she was still asleep...

Jade Felicity Bilkey

The EVI's perfect movements remind me of those robotic arms printing host muscles in Westworld

I Dare Korval

Actually I don't think it actually mentions what she wrote with. Being described as a blackboard I assumed it was in chalk, but maybe the author can elaborate a bit better what she actually used.

ghost01173430

Sacrilege!

lukeskylicker

"We're in your walls Illunor."

Marshel Helsper

I thought both were. The ink to keep it from running. I'll have to go back and reread.

Marshel Helsper

Wingdings.

Google Google

That was quite funny Great job🦾

tonright

i imagined the angsty dramatic shoebill in your profile picture saying that really seriously and it was so funny to me lmao

Google Google

One of the noble Students are like: If that's a commoner Able to write perfectly What are the nobles Of her people like?!

ghost01173430

Nexian script vs comic sans. Who wins?

Willow Arkan

How odd. I write for work and education regularly, more for the latter but still.

Willow Arkan

Qiv has activated her trap card: mechanized calligraphy

owl loverhoot

why would they? The pens are whats enchanted, not the ink.

Peter Altieri

“We simply have the soldier control the armor remotely from very far away”

Peter Altieri

That genuinely sounds like something the professors would do!😂

Pyrion

Penmanship is absolutely a flex, considering once you're out of grade school the need to write any more than your own signature drops to almost nil.

Pyrion

Yeah I can imagine that's gonna set off a scandal of its own. Perfect High Nexian calligraphy in manaless ink.

Xylophone Smith

she broke their minds with words and soon she'll do it with flying

How long until we find out Emma took a day off and no one notices?

erickjosemolina

A raíz de este capítulo donde se muestran un poco de las capacidades de evi con el piloto automático y la letra perfecta estaría genial que se les enseñará a los demás del grupo como una nueva amiga o compañera

Marshel Helsper

Did anyone notice that Emma's ink was manaless?

Canpinter

I like the pov from the other students but i think it might help alot if we had a cannon list of who was in whos peer group as it can be kinda hard to keep straight.

Pyrion

I could just imagine Vanavan hastily scribbling "DO NOT ERASE" underneath it, underlined several times, and then he proceeds to have the entire blackboard physically removed so that they can pore over it to try to figure out how the heck her penmanship is that good.

Michael Halpern

her hands are not in the "gloves"

Marshel Helsper

I was almost hoping Emma would refuse. "Nah, I'm not participating in this nonsense."

ArdenW

My brain. "Damn. It's gonna be hard to replicate what a printer di-nope, never mind."

Conviviacr

I love both the desire to make Emma look like an idiot and then when she exceeds expectations down play it in your own mind like it was NBD... Like if doing it was NBD why the hell did it matter?

Marshel Helsper

"Oh. We don't."

Ultimatecalibur

It sounds like the Nexus' manawells are actually part of a mana conversion/concentration system, and that for some reason Sol is no longer outputting mana.

TheArchivist

The academic dishonesty ;)

Venidlara

Ah yes, Speech to Text, now with a Handwriting function! XD

13L00D13ANE

Hahahah did EVI just come in clutch again?

Oniklo

What I'm looking forward right now is the moment when Thalmin learns that the armour can act on its own, and ponders the question 'Why even bother putting a soldier in it?'.

Remi

Chat GPT v3000 hard at work

TheEagerReader

It’s a good thing the AI took over for that part.

I really hope we get a fun iron man moment. Make it a biathlon …. Fly an obstacle course and shoot targets. Have the drones blast the metal/rock iron man song

Ragnar Pendon

Of all the things to flex on... penmanship was not on my bingo cards 🫠 Can't wait for Emma to bust out the chopper pack to troll Thacea's hater XD

HiMyNameIsFelipe

A sinple chapter were we see the opinions of others, and the capacity to replicate by Emma (and her suit)

It’s so petty, I love it.
