Yes, getting tired of the 'infinite' and 'eternal' mentions...propaganda words. While the Nexus is expanding radially outward, the initial inner circle and each concentric rings are finite. Would be great to get area numbers for each region and a sense of RATE of expansion throughout history. That would inform any theoretical analysis of the Nexus' fundamental properties.

Joshua Haylock

Cringe.

IHasArms

And to us, it's physically impossible. And just like how we used to think that the Earth was flat, we discovered later on that it wasn't. How do we not know that the Nexus' god isn't just a guy controlling AI for an artificial world? Besides, theorizing is half the fun of reading a story.

Jacob

Because the Nexians have been nothing but forthright and open with non-propagandized information so far /sarcasm

Jacob

Replying to Fogel: Testing that question is exactly my point. Is leypull in the Nexus big-G "Gravity" as we know it or just "gravity-ish" in appearance? Replicating simple experiments to measure the physical constants (as we know them) and seeing if/where they break down or results differ (even slightly) would go a long way to answering that question.

MrToxido Cat

Hmmm, now that i think about it, uf the engineers on earth were able to manipulate manaflow with the shard of impart, maybe it can be used like a catalyst on a staff and with some processess like lithography and etching (similar to what we use to precess silicon) can be direct connected to a serial port on the armor to allow for some kind of programmable spellcraft. I think its an interesting idea but i dont know if something like this would work in this story.

PEBZ101

I thought it existed like an accretion disk the ring around a black hole, just from mana which when it is stable it forms into the ever growing nexus, like steam cooling down to liquid then freezing into ice when it loses enough energy to settle down.

Michael Halpern

the natural pairs in a fractral crystal theory is the most likely explanation for how the AIS was able to get it to work and how the nexus can do it without delving into some rather advanced theoretical concepts that they don't seem to have

Michael Halpern

We know all the fundamental forces still work the same, or at least some of the equipment Emma brought wouldn't work.

Fogel

Just because they have something that is like gravity, doesn't mean it obeys the same rules.

Marshel Helsper

Intelligent doesn't mean "sapient." The distinction between being categorized "sapient" verses just sentient is to justify the extermination of intelligent creatures. You are either "sapient", in which case you have rights under Expectant Decorum, or you're an animal.

Jacob

Given the Nexus' size and that they are well aware (and have) the same law of gravity we do (i.e. leypull) Emma has to wonder at some point "How does the Nexus stay a flat disk and not get pulled into a sphere by it's own gravity?" And if it's larger than earth, why is the gravity still roughly 1g? I'd like / expect to see her run some simple experiments (at least as a side task) to establish whether or not the usual physical constants are the same as in Earthrealm. The fabricator should be able to make all she needs to do a Cavendish experiment, speed-of-light measurements, etc.... And the experiments that require smaller setups could be done both inside & outside her tent to see if the background mana radiation impacts the results.

Marco

I also don't think that it is but, They say that it is expanding and any thing that expands Infinitely must expand at a slower and slower rate as it gets larger so it is technically not infinite in size.

Brachy LP

Funny you point that out since My current Working Idea is that it uses It's Crystals as a Sort of Passive Manasense allowing it to pick up on Alterations in the flow of Mana around it giving it 360° Awareness of anything around it. But Emma basically being a Blindspot in the Manastreams would of course make it go "Potential Threat, Make an Assessment!" and seek visual confirmation. Wich prolly didn't help it much either but It didn't have the Luxury to go in for further Study

Brachy LP

We aren't Killing the Dragon... Just yet. Like Emmas first question was "Can we avoid Killing it?" Most Likely we gain the Ability of Dragon Assisted Airstrikes

Brachy LP

There weren't Natural Pairs? Like the Minor Shards of Impart are either Naturally Occuring Crystal Formations Near Manawells OR Grow on These Dragons. Then They are refined and Entangled with one another and given out to realms, as for the One lost in the Crate Incident: It was HALF of a Shard the other Half still remains on Earth they literall cut it up meaning that they artifically created a Pair out of a Single object wich had benn altred from it's natural state into the State necessary to work as a Minor Shard of impart. Meaning that At best the Crystals are only Entangled within themselves in there Natural state

Tacrad

Just putting this out there. Domain and demesne are basically the same word.

Xylophone Smith

the nexus doesn't sound nearly as big as it's made out to be

Gregory Sampson

Why are we assuming it's anything other than what the Nexians say it is?

Joshua Haylock

Just "drop the sun" on the dragon, or use a railgun/some future tech weapon to end it, yoink the crystal, and gain the illustrious title of Dragonslayer, if I remember right it's been some time since a Student last achieved the feat, so just show Human Superiority.

IHasArms

I know that many people have said that the nexus is a ring world, but to me that seems incredibly unlikely. For one, it always sees the sun, so why would there be locations with multiple suns? Personally, I believe it to be more of an Alderson disc, basically it's a bunch of artificial disc worlds that expand the size of a solar system.

Michael Halpern

the pairs almost certainly exist naturally in the crystals, it just takes work to target specific ones. in fact it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the crystal structure was fractal with repeating sets of every entangled group.

Marshel Helsper

He has a vested interest in keeping Emma alive and well, both for the peer group and his troubles with the Library. A working relationship has developed.

LumiOak

Its very possible the dragon was staring at emma, because of its lack of mana. The dragon could probably sende everything around it but emma, making her the only thing it needed to actually look at to precieve, and thus a threat, the only threat.

Brachy LP

IF I recall Correctly. The Dragons Crystals aren't Naturally Quantum Entangled. Thats just something you can do with them. Like you can use Quartz for percise Clocks

ANTIcarrot

That's a bit like saying bats and dolphins have no need to develop sonar. That's not quite how living things work. We also don't know the full range of what the QEC can be used for. the dragon may have a completely different way of using it. It's also possible that the Dragons aren't natural, but are the remains of some of those very old civilisations that blew themselves up so many time before the modern Nexian era. Magic steads with fancy radios are presumably better than regular magic steads after all.

trebor

this comment i did not anticipate

Brachy LP

Well it was coroborated by the Adventurers and the Gang... Like At this point it isn't even just the Nexian official Word at this point but just actual Eye Witnesses and Illunor is from were the Smart ones Lived. So it's not Nexian words. Also maybe even if it was Sapient it might not even Percieve any "lower" being as worthy of Concious Thought or attention...

trebor

true but the crystals are not naturally attuned but they could act loke a kind of mana storage it is crytalysed mana after all

Michael Halpern

since when has the taking the Nexian official word on matters at face value seemed like a good idea?

Brachy LP

I mean They were described as Smort But not Sapient

Brachy LP

Not at all

Ragnar Pendon

Awww... are we ruling out negotiations with the big scaly then? :(

I Dare Korval

It could very well be that it was a baby or even an egg when the dragons were overthrown and so it's been in captivity and is fairly young, but still an intelligent dragon none the less.

Brachy LP

I mean the Gang and Sorecar literally said there natural state is "unattuned" and I do Also think that the Crystals serve a Function, I just disagree with Your Theory of Dragon Hivemind. Cuz Dragons Narratively do not work as Groups. There Narrative Role is: Big,Rare and Important. They Fashion the Narrative Around them. As for in Story, the Dragon, if part of a Hivemind wouldn't just set up camp near a Spawnpoint for Armed Guards Everywere. They would either retreat to then return to the Hive or if Deemed an Acceptable loss attack more people to Deal as much damage as far from the Hive as possible. My Working theory is that the Crystals serve as a Sort of Passive Manasensing Tool, like a Barometer that reacts to Change in the Ambient Manastreams as an Early Warning so the Dragon knows to look out. They also just could be a Byproduct of this Creatures Magical Metabolism. Or have Fuction to communicate Passively, like Adornments on Birds or Reptils to attract Mates.

Cinema

Michael Halpern

The library said nothing on of they serve a function in the dragons or not, because that wasn't relevant to the trade, I am going to bet they absolutely are.

Brachy LP

Well they aren't naturally Quantum Entangled they just posses the Crystaline and Magical Structure necessary to create such entanglements on there own there not really doing much at least as far as I remember the story like sure they might give you some sort of Magical Tremmor sense but the Crystals aren't Entangled naturally

Michael Halpern

it also lets the Nexus be technically correct in the worst way possible

Michael Halpern

he's also the ticket into the nearest town to the dragon.

TheEagerReader

The dragons being a sapient hive mind is a good idea. The big ones being sapient are because they are the Queens/speaker.

TheEagerReader

I was wondering. Is the Dragon sapient and Nexian propaganda is at work, or is it as intelligent as a whale? Either way, Emma should break out her war gear for this quest.

Michael Halpern

i mean there's not a lot of evolutionary advantages to growing QEC crystals if it isn't sapient, or at least part of a sapient hive mind.

Google Google

After being humbled by Emma many times, he is now helping her.

Brachy LP

Amd some people already called it, wich if the Author reads this just means that you get Your Characterizations and Story Across. Emma is a Good one avoiding harm were possible. No Need to kill the Dragon. But the fact it has been Brought up that Dragons CAN be Sapient throws some Interresting sidequestions especially with the Deadlocking of eyes on the Dragons Part. Could this be the beginning rise of a New Greatwyrm? Will Emma have a Baby Sapience to safeguard? Also On Call Draconic Air Strikes sound Dope as hell

Michael Halpern

I think that's obvious, especially considering what its crystals do,

Michael Halpern

its a hive mind. why else would it have magic QEC crystals that means even if the individual isn't sapient, on its own if there are enough of them networked together... also now I have the image of Ilunor in a side car.

Hughes Andrew

I still think the dragon is intelligent, and the Nexian’s are propagandized.

Steve

Agreed.

Pierre Florendo

Um, yay Ilunor?
