Beige

Basking shaaaark! If you’re still open to freaks :3

Bel Tamtu

Oh good other folks have also said the aye aye, they're so freaky and cute I love them so much

Bel Tamtu

Goblin shark!

Bel Tamtu

The aye-aye. Everyone has heard of and seen variations on ring-tailed lemurs but way more folks need to see an aye-aye.

Amy Sennett

Oarfish and narrow-headed soft shell turtle

Lisa Utzig

Star nosed mole :) love those lil dudes and they blow bubbles!!

Krista Yonz

nighthawk for sure and I was inspired by your beautiful goblin shark to also request more deepwater sharks... greenland sharks, megamouth sharks, cookiecutter sharks, frilled sharks... there are probably more but those are the fucked up guys i know about!

Jam

oh my god, i can't believe i didn't put down sacabambaspis. everyone please look him up

Jean Cabot

Gaboon snakes, elephant shrews (any of them really), lowland-streaked tenrec, aye-aye, horned viper, bushdog (it looks exactly what someone would draw if they were simply told to draw a mammal), marsh rabbit (why rabbit with ears so small?), gujri goat. So many good options.

Melly

Gila Monsters, not really that weird, but there's a bunch of fun cryptid lore, like poison breath, with no basis in anything Spiny Rats, trying to figure out which kinds have the good spines that stick out make me think "that's a fun little freak" Giant squirrels, Indian giant squirrel has funky colors, I'm also learning about the red and white giant flying squirrel

Melly

Colugo! real freaky. erroneously called "flying lemurs". cute in a sort of might feed on my nightmares kind of way. tree shrews, rat-things with people ears

Margaret Hill

We get these rock squirrels in central Texas in rocky areas that are black on the top half of their bodies and grey on the bottom. They look like two different squirrels stitched together from far away

Margaret Hill

Texas blind salamander

Kathleen Dull

The common spotted Cuscus! A strange creature my family has been oddly obsessed with for years

Squeebash

Hope I'm not too late to suggest some weirdos! =) Tibetan Fox Pallas Cat Tuatara (the lizard that's not a lizard!) Tui House Centipede Pygmy Anteater Oarfish Tarsier

Maddie P.

Has anyone suggested the tawny frogmouth?

Melissa Swanson

I think both are cute but Sunfish (mola molas) & Naked-neck chikums are my lil weirdo suggestions.

dogshoes

Omg I have so many, paddlefish, diplocaulus,Mandarin fish, sun bear, pronghorn, elephant shrew, (I feel like a few of our missing link cousins would be slightly interesting probably pretty peculiar), just to start hehe

Emily!

Irish Elk, they're extinct but things just shouldn't be that Big. Unsure if this is freaky enough though??

FenMura

Eye-eyes and the Barreleye Fish or the Colugo are fun ones.

Cavarain

Do extinct animals count? Arthropleura???

Mallow

please... please... sacabambaspis...

Nick

suggesting a few of the weirdos ive been able to take care of at my workplace (all varying levels of freak): turkey vultures, giant anteaters, red ruffed lemurs, debrazzas monkeys, southern ground hornbills, and pygmy slow lorises :)

Jem Milton

Jerboa! My favourite little bunny mouse!

Maggie

The False Gharial, Leopard Seal, Wolf Eel, Striped Hyena, Frilled Shark, Stygian Owl, Crab Spider, and the Bearded Vulture are some of my favorites! I love weird and unsettling animals, this project is such a fun idea!

Franko

suggestions: pistol shrimps, bombardier beetles, lorises, terror birds, dobson flies, giant water bugs (aka toe-biters), whip scorpions, short-horned lizards, and gharials

CupcakeSouls

sacabambaspis!!

CupcakeSouls

The Gerenuk and the Gulabi goat are the only two I can think of for now but I'll comment again if I think of any more!

ookst

and the Sage Grouse!

ookst

the golden target beetle has funny little feet

Jam

some of my favorite absolute freaks that make my skin scrawl: tongue-eating louse, antarctic scale worm, hammer head worm (kinda silly), creatonotos gangis, urechis unicinctus, feather star fish, edestus, dollocaris, cotylorhynchus

grumbbyy

Three extinct and one extant: helicoprion, megatherium, anomalocaris, mola

Korinne Mark

First ones that come to mind are sun bears and water deer. I don't remember where I heard it, but I vaguely remember a story of patrons of a zoo complaining about the sun bears because they thought they were just dudes in bear suits. But in reality, sun bears are just... like that.

Beccy

My suggestions are weevil and hagfish! Also votes here for shoebill and goblin shark <3

Katie

Ohh I love tawny frogs mouths. More mouth than brain but so cute.

Katie

Not weird but Capybaras are so cute 😍

Katie

Bat fly

Katie

Ves

they’re not so freaky so much as they are unique, but: hummingbird clearwings. a moth that hovers like a hummingbird and has clear wings! Hemaris thysbe is its scientific name!

Brachy Donger

You're so right. I recently learned they're in the Bible! "Proverbs 30: 24-28 24 “Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise: 25 Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer; 26 hyraxes are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags; 27 locusts have no king, yet they advance together in ranks; 28 a lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings’ palaces." I'm not religious but was shocked to find the little guys getting that kind of praise.

Brachy Donger

Aww I was late recommend hyraxes, they're my favorite. thought of a few others: nudibranch, potoo, kakapo (and its cool cousin the night parrot 😎), coati, legless lizard, bedbug.

Douglas Day

I'd love to see a Hyrax! They're not all that freaky, but most people I know haven't heard of them, and they're so lovely.

Kevin Vognar

I wanna see an olm~!

Cory!

Blunthead slug snake, velvet worm, blyth's tragopan, kouprey, greater kudu, houbara bustard, saiga antelope, zebra duiker, yellow pasha butterfly catapillar, halter quarter horse, american baskir curly horse, frillback pigeon, jacana bird, kong vulture, quagga. Pacific barreleye, ogre-faced spiders Can we add more later if we think of them?

Hross

The horned guan is a very wild looking little bird. Another wild looking bird? The horned screamer. It’s horns all the way bird.

Charlotte Flam

Also want to see aye-aye! They're so cute and weird. 🤗

Spotted hyena, crested duck (they have a hole in their heads!) rain frog, I cannot BELIEVE nobody has said Aye-aye yet, tarsier, or bushbaby. Oooh, siphonophores too, and pumpkin froglets. Maybe elephant fish too if you're into the whole Elegant shnozz theme?

Allyson

muntjacs, cassowarries, and portuguese man o wars are a lil freaky! for extinct animals, I think north american lions (big!!), giant beavers and ground sloths (:

Katie

Idk if these have been mentioned yet, but the Potoo and the Arabian Sand Boa are both wonderfully derpy pals that are fun to look at

UnfortunateCorvid

I’ve got some creepy ones for ya: Basket Star (Euryalina), Tiburonia granrojo (big red jelly), Stygiomedusa gigantea (giant phantom jelly), vampire squid, goblin shark, deep-sea hatchetfish, Barreleye fish, fangtooth (fish), viperfish, coconut crab, giant isopod, cookiecutter shark. Less creepy: glass frog, dumbo octopus, flapjack octopus, Chaetopterus pugaporcinus (pigbutt worm/flying buttocks), Scotoplanes (sea pig), saiga antelope, proboscis monkey, [extinct] Helicoprion (buzzsaw jaw shark), [extinct] Platybelodon (flat-spear tusked elephant-type), Palaeoloxodon falconeri (dwarf elephant—look up island rule of evolution if you want a wild ride through a rabbithole)… I could go on & on, lol. I at one point wanted to do a podcast on animals (maybe one day…) & those were some contenders for episodes!

Frank Marshall

LAST ONE SORRY I don’t know if this counts but Pinworms literally make me feel ill just looking at them so I’ll nominate them too

Frank Marshall

Also Doodles (dog breed) lmao

Frank Marshall

Domesticated breeds - pugs OR chihuahuas that have big bulging eyes and lolling tongues from over breeding. Bonus if they’re always dressed in human clothes

Zak Hammerman

the zombie frog got me thinking about tapirs! why in the convergent evolution do they have those floppy snouts?

Ruth Robertson

I'm here to cosign shoebill. But also, axolotls are adorable but super weird. House centipedes look like sentient hell mustaches. Blue ringed octopi--tiny, precious, deadly.

Monica D

Any of the fat tail sheep breeds, soft shell turtles, Atretochoana eiselti, aka the Penis Snake

Cactus!

Myanmar snub-nosed monkey (they have the least nose of all primates!!)

Hannah K

The Ask a Mortician episode about devils hole pup fish is so good

Meryl Juergens

Shoebill storks, I fear them but I want to love them

Diddle

Moa. the giant relatives of ostriches. in fourth grade my whole class would pretend to be moa and smack each other with our heads. my backup is Pikas, the little mountain dwelling rodents that are difficult to search for because of another famous rodent who is apparently unrelated completely. they're not rly freaky though

malphe

Solifuges are super creepy looking critters that are actually really chill! The Tully Monster sounds fake but is a really strange extinct animal. And shout out to my favourite critters, land hermit crabs! The species might not be so weird in the grand scheme of things, but I keep some and those ones specifically are little wierdos.

Catrina Tellez

Elephant seals freak me out! Mostly just the males with their floppy noses, and they can be so mean! I got chased by one on a field trip to Año Nuevo as a kid. I'll never forget the sheer terror I felt running away from that schnozz...

mirarevias

OHHHH definitely the Gorgonopsid, Entelodonts and Smilodon Perpetrator for extinct ones off the top of my head. Trying to think of some more currently living freaky dudes, and those splitfin flashlight fish, great pootoo, red-lipped batfish and the Mexican mole lizard come to mind
