2021 Recap -- Here's the Best of the Year, Thanks to You!
🕑 Added 2021-12-28 18:00:05 +0000 UTCHello neighbors!
I hope the year-end holidays find you in good cheer, surrounded by loving family of whatever composition brings you the greatest joy. I know I say this a lot, but I couldn't make any of the stuff that I do without your support, and I'm so grateful every single day to be on this fun ride with you.
As 2021 comes to a close (good riddance, frankly) I wanted to go through some of the highlights of the year -- some of the best stuff that you made possible by being a part of this Patreon.
Videos!
Thanks to you, I was able to release more videos about film & TV history than any previous year -- eighteen of them, whew! Here's the top five new videos of 2021:
- #1: The one about Jim Nabors' secret love story, which is now the most-watched video I've ever released, go figure!
- #2: The one about The Nanny's groundbreaking inclusion of queer characters.
- #3: The Straightening of Chandler Bing, featuring a tribute to Friends and gay shawls.
- #4: The story of gay Disney villains, from Snow White all the way through the Disney Renaissance of the 90s.
- #5: The one about the gay undertones of Bewitched. (Which ties in nicely to my video about Paul Lynde!)
Bonus Videos!
Okay this was a BIG year for bonus videos -- I was able to release thirty (!!!) of them this year, about five hours' worth of weird funny stories I dug up, obscure gems I uncovered, clips that you sent me, and goofy magazine treasures. Crawling through archives not only takes a long, long time, but it can also be pretty expensive to obtain rare old materials. It's all thanks to your support that I was able to devote enough time and resources to go hunting for fun stuff to bring back to you. Here's the top bonus videos of 2021:
- #1: The Adorable Homoeroticism of Starsky and Hutch
- #2: The Sacred Band of Thebes, MASH, and How to be a βQueen for a Dayβ
- #3: Are Ernie & Bert a Couple?
- #4: Angela Lansbury's Gay Husband, Cultists, and Chorus Boys
- #5: Paul Lynde's best Hollywood Squares quips, responding to your comments, and Penelope Pitstop
Sewers of Paris!
Still going strong after all these years -- The Sewers of Paris podcast was my first piece of ~content~ on Patreon, back in (good lord) 2015. Featuring interviews with queer folks about the entertainment that's changed their lives, here are the most-downloaded episodes of the year:
- Let me See Where I Can Fit In (Ep 324 - Clue/Urban Bohemian)
- A Pride Omnibus (Ep 339 - X-Men/Joe Glass)
- My Love of Death (Ep 318 - Dennis the Menace/Sheldon Goodman)
- A Professional Bee Botherer (Ep 320 - Lord of the Rings/Lewis Bartlett)
- The Devil's Name is on All my Paychecks (Ep 346 - Fran Tirado/Greek myths)
- A Special WandaVision Chat with Brett White!
Other Stuff!
In addition to all those major projects, I was able to release lots of other little bits and bobs this year -- if you like my stuff, you'll probably enjoy:
- Queer Vox History Lessons, a weekly Instagram post that I write in collaboration with researcher Joanna Marsh about the LGBTQ+ history of voice actors, video games, and animation
- Weekly comic book reviews for The Stranger
- I've started reviewing CONTEMPORARY films -- who knew, Hollywood's apparently still making movies
- A visit to the Enterprising Individuals podcast to geek out about queer Star Trek stuff, FYI: The Murphy Brown Podcast to talk about 90s sitcoms, the Oh, Mr. Sheffield podcast to talk about Fran Drescher, and the Question Box podcast to answer shocking sexy-time questions
- A fun video collab with Be Kind Rewind and a bunch of other great YouTubers
- With my friend Samantha Rei, I created a test-pilot for a new podcast that we might make in 2022: An exploration of the fashions of Star Trek.
- And my cute little newsletter where you can read all about even more of what I'm working on
What's Next?
I've got a looooooooong list of projects to work on in 2022 -- look forward to more of everything coming soon. And I'm sorry to be repetitive, but: Thank you for joining me on Patreon and being a partner in the creation of all this stuff. It's a true joy to make videos and podcasts and whatnot for all of you, and an even greater joy to know that through your support, your feedback, your ideas, your requests, and your research help, we're all making it together.
See you next year!
Matt
