Funny story time. When my oldest friend (online, penpals for 20+ years) came out to me it was a complete shock, mostly because she casually dropped it in the middle of a conversation about a writing project I was doing. I was upset for a minute because she'd transitioned two years before telling me - her excuse was that she "forgot to mention it" - but also because I'd been calling her "dude" all that time without knowing. She told me it was fine when she stopped laughing at me.
