Also, yes. Kent was a jerk there. It's part of what he needs to calm down about. Now seems like he's banned. I disagree with him being banned. However, I agree he needs a timeout. Edit: Seems like it's a ban on 6.13 only. My ideas don't change but it's not as serious as I'd think.

I think they did too much. Yes Kent needs a timeout. However, not a permanent one. Edit: Scratch that. Seems to be just banned. on 6.13 and not the kernel as a whole. This is a timeout. Let's hope Kent takes it as a real timeout. BCacheFS is still not very widely used. There's still bugs.

I have been sponsoring you for the last few years at $20 a month, not a lot, but it's not insignificant I don't think. Some unsolicited advice from a recovering a-hole, I have worked with at least five Kernel devs at various companies, I have only ever met one kernel that wasn't an outward jerk. If all the other kernel devs think YOU are being a jerk, then you probably are. I would swallow your pride, apologize, and do what needs to be done to get this fine piece of software shipped in mainline for good. Your pride is not worth making it take even longer than the last 10+ years of work done by you and the community on this project.

I am not here to argue. I just would like Kent to understand that the current approach isn't going to get him anywhere and if bcachefs is to succeed, his behavior needs to change. One thing I'm referring to is this: https://lore.kernel.org/all/citv2v6f33hoidq75xd2spaqxf7nl5wbmmzma4wgmrwpoqidhj@k453tmq7vdrk/ (and yes, Linus did say quite a lot of similar things in the past, that was equally inacceptable. He also did receive quite a lot of pushback for that over the years) Then I'm also referring to this thread: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/kj5vcqbx5ztolv5y3g4csc6te4qmi7y7kmqfora2sxbobnrbrm@rcuffqncku74/ where instead of addressing Linus' concerns about following process and not breaking the build, Kent starts arguing how bad BtrFS is and how great BcacheFS is in comparison, which has nothing to do with the actual issue. And then also Kent basically arguing he knows better and doesn't have to follow the kernel's quality checks just because he has his own community and CI system. Which is great, I do appreciate that, but it's irrelevant when working within the kernel community, you need to follow their rules then.

The LKML is public. If his behavior has been "plain inacceptable" then you could easily link to it.

Max Bruckner

Sorry Kent, but I have to side with the CoC team on this. The way you have been behaving on the LKML was just plain inacceptable (and no, others doing the same or having done the same in the past isn't a valid argument, it's exactly as inacceptable for them). You might or might not be in the right when it comes to the technical arguments but that is not the issue here.. Same for the discussions you were having with Linus time and time again, completely ignoring what he was saying when he wanted you to follow the same procedure as everybody else and you just arguing that your way was better and your FS was better than BTreeFS, which is a non-argument. It might be hard for you, but you really need to work on your behavior, otherwise bcachefs itself might become collateral damage from it.

Thank you for your very fine work on this. I'm sure dealing with some members of the open source community is really hard work and an unenviable task. Little fiefdoms I'm sure exists everywhere. The rust guys seems to be having similar issues. I guess though, one of the reasons I contribute to this project is I see it has having the best chance of being a NextGen default filesystem. This is badly needed. If it drops out of the kernel this won't really happen and traditionally out of kernel filesystems haven't really done well. I guess *unless* you were to get a BIG distro to use this as a default filesystem, that is probably only Ubuntu or RH (Fedora perhaps). Even Suse couldn't move ReisierFS to be taken up more widely, as I recall. The best course of action would be to get some of the heat taken out of this. Best Wishes

The last part of this post really does ring true for me. And that really troubles me given how dismissive i read some of your *and* some of the other maintainers emails on the lists. There's a lot of reflection to be done by all parties here. The one most obvious though, is unfortunately the way you write emails, and the way those emails make other people feel. I don't think the tone helps other parties get into a solution oriented headspace when you write emails that way. My perception is it's one of the core disagreements of this conflict, that the feelings of those who you are talking with can be held important while getting the same technical disagreements sorted. Or at least that they don't see the signs they can trust that you believe that. As for the issues caused by others in the community, this post I think covers well.

Also, I've been loosely following the turmoil in the Kernel. It's not that good but I'm hoping the leadership is still keeping it together. There's a LOT of ego among lots of people who have feelings and feel threatened. That's part of being human, unfortunately. I don't know the details because I don't have time. However, I believe it's still quite tame overall even though there are hotspots that need to be calmed down. Also the latest gen oversensitivity also needs to be tuned down more but that's not a straightforward thing to do for now.

AGAIN?!?!?! Didn't you calm down when you got the last drama? Why is it so hard to follow their rules? You are sending patches to the kernel THEY manage, so you have to follow THEIR rules. Be patient. Follow the release windows. Now that you fucked up 3 times with your behavior, you need to be on your best behavior with them. You are digging your grave and you don't even see it. Take 1 year off from the kernel if you need then come back during a release window. You need to learn to swallow your ego otherwise someone else will swallow it themselves and multiply against you. Take a step back and reassess. This is the last thin line before bcachefs may get rejected in the kernel because of how much disturbance you cause them regardless of whether you are right or not. Even if you are right in how the kernel should work, they manage it and you do not. Don't just go into someone else's house and define how they should be and manage their life in their own house. This is basically the same. Calm yourself. The gun is already aiming at your foot and ready to shoot it. Don't shoot your own foot.

Andrew Pam

Thank you for all your hard work and your persistence. It really is appreciated.
