I've watched the dub version of the charge to see what all the fuss was about, but I didn't feel it as much as I felt original version. I'm neither american nor japanese, but to me japanese voice actors have this extra something that their american counterparts simply don't have. A certain depth and color to their voices that makes it way more emotionally impactful, rather than just cool. To each their own, but I will never get why some people think dub is better.

I watched attack on titan when it first came out in Japanese, before the dub was even announced yet. The dub version of Erwins speech is 100x better. Personally I think it's the same reason that Connie's joke didn't work in the sub or dub. It was written to be in Japanese and so the sub titles don't do it justice, but when the speech was dubbed, they rewrote it to fit better. Ive never seen any subtitle translations do Erwins speech right

I listened to the dub out of curiosity for Erwin’s death and just cringed the whole time. Suddenly everyone having American voices really threw me lol. I think what it’s gotta be is whichever version you start watching it in, you have to stick to that one. I’m a sub watcher since 2013, so I can’t do the dub for AOT but I don’t mind dub for Fruits Basket as a counter example, because I watched that back in the early 2000s in English first.

Yeah, I think the "roof over your head" translation is funnier and makes more sense as an English pun. The Spanish version translates the joke by making a pun on "mi casa" (my house) and "Mikasa" lol

Erwin’s dub actor, J Michael Tatum, absolutely KILLS his role. Perfect casting. Both sub and dub actors are great, but as a native English speaker it hits so much harder with his incredible acting. Oh and can’t forget his performance at the end of season 2 while Erwin’s arm is bit, “I SAID ADVANCE GOD DAMMIT!!”

I don't see too many people talking about their confusion at 5:18 with conny's joke, but it's basically just a bad translation of a Japanese pun. Conny in this context is talking about Eren's house, which is "ie" in Japanese. He says "ie ga~!" and it sounds like he's saying Yeager.

Fax, better working condition, better pay which means better competition and wider pool of talent. Works with animators so interacting directly with the source material which is important because the mouth is animated FOR Japanese scripts instead of other languages so feels more natural. Working directly with studio also means way better sound mixing/production due to that. Voice actors reading lines in the same room vs English va who record by themselves (usually) so again, feels more natural. There are some exceptions where the English VAs are more suited to the character and more iconic like FMA but even then all of the other things suffer such as sound mixing, va talent for minor characters like grunts, mouth animations are scripted for Japanese lines, group recording vs solo recordings for natural feel.

You know, there are several interesting observations here (unless someone has already pointed these out above) - in Levi's OVAs, Erwin tells Levi to not regret his choices as regret raises uncertainty and uncertainty affects decision-making, so one ends up leaving it to someone else. In Erwin's last moments, he is torn between 2 choices - his own individual choice to see the basement, and his duty as the commander to defeat the Beast titan. This uncertainty affects his decision-making and we see Levi make the decision for him (telling him to die in battle), which causes his eyes to widen slightly before he smilingly accepts Levi's decision. Also, he tells Levi that he will have to tell a slew of lies to the young recruits in order to rouse them for a suicide charge. However, I do not in the slightest think what he said were lies. In fact, I think he spoke the truth till the end, essentially giving their lives and deaths meaning. I just love his speech very much! Isayama really outdid himself there in my opinion.

Yes, they are indeed! However, in 1x5, Eren transforms and in 2x12, Eren uses the Coordinate, so in both these situations, there is an unexpected and unpredictable twist. However, in this one, they make use of what they have and manage to emerge victorious. To me, these episodes represent true victory as each character plays a part, risking everything and unsure of victory, without any deus ex machina to suddenly turn the tide in their favour (unlike 1x5 and 2x12).

It's still so good in sub. The dub version of Eren's titan screams messes with my ears real bad. Erwin was so close but so far from finding out the truth. These side shots of Levi and Erwin with the rocks flying over are some of my favorite scenes in the series...at least prior to season 4 :)
