I know I’m coming with this comment rather late. But I wanted to answer a question I heard one of you ask during the episode and glancing through the comments I didn’t see anyone answer it. Someone asked why Larys Strong could do what he did with the prisoners. Larys had the official title of Lord Confessor. And in this fictional universe that is the title of the man in charge of torture and execution for the King in Westeros. They do use the title once this season in one of the later episodes. I think that this is a detail that was clearly stated in the book Fire & Blood. Yet it is not very clear in the television show, even though it is evidently still true in the television series. BTW, I wasn’t one of your Patreons when you originally watched this. I joined to watch your Game of Thrones reactions and the trailer for Season Two of House of the Dragon renewed my interest in seeing your full reactions to Season One.

It’s dumb of her because it’s a catastrophic political move. Her succession was already going to be difficult just due to the fact that she’s a woman, having bastards just makes it even worse. It’s why Alicent got so mad at Rhaenyra after she found out she had lied to her, because she realized Rhaenyra wasn’t taking her position as heir seriously and could see the writing on the wall for a violent succession, which would endanger her children. Rhaenyra only proved her right by siring such obvious bastards. There’s no indication that Laenor was infertile, and for such an important task as producing legitimate heirs I would expect them to try VERY hard to conceive before resorting to alternatives. Even then she could have picked another blonde or something lol. There is also ways for gay men to still produce children, look up “beard marriages”. Those produce kids all the time, in fact I have personal experience with this since my uncle was married and had kids but when my grandparents died he came out of the closet and got divorced, he now lives with his boyfriend. They could have also done what Margaery suggested and had one of Laenor’s boyfriends help them out in the bedroom. But Jacaerys is about the age of the time-skip in this episode, which doesn’t suggest that they were trying all that hard or for too long before Rhaenyra decided to start sleeping with Harwin. Fact of the matter is that this decision is not only life and death for them, but for countless across the realms of war breaks out. So I think it’s fair to call Rhaenyra’s decision to father bastards pretty dumb, or at the very least incredibly irresponsible.

Ok but we went over how she had months to decide and pick for herself. An opportunity that Alicent says is extremely unique “it is rare for girls in this realm to get a choice between two suitors, let alone two score”. Rhaenyra likely fielded over 100 suitors and still did not pick. She was not forced to marry Laenor. Viserys was FORCED by Rhaenyra to wed her and Laenor to clean up her image after Rhaenyra despoiled herself. Rhaenyra put Viserys in an impossible situation where he HAD to betroth her. She had ample opportunity to marry whoever she wanted, and she personally decided not to take that opportunity.

That is true only if you intentionally blind yourself to the other half of the equation and willfully forget the prior episodes. Criston says in episode four, that she “ended the tour with two months remaining”. Meaning it is fair to assume she had spent at least a month meeting with prospective suitors. Had Rhaenyra picked just ONE of the hundreds of suitors that came before her, she and her father would be honor bound by the laws of the realm and society to keep that marriage proposal intact. Meaning that if she had returned to Kings Landing, in episode four with a future king consort, she never would’ve had to marry Laenor. It was her own pride, arrogance, and selfishness that prevented her from choosing a future husband. Viserys gave her months to choose just one guy and she couldn’t do that. Rhaenyra failed herself. Honestly, had Rhaenyra had chosen a guy before she returned to King’s Landing in episode 4, she probably would have been emotionally fulfilled 😉 enough to not feel the need to run around the streets with dirty Daemon.

Criston Cole is literally my hero. Pretty much the only character in the show who earned their role off the strength of their own back, not their family name. Criston’s family are stewards for a smaller house in the Stormlands, and as it says in the books, stewards are meant to count spoons. For Criston to grow from the son of a man who counts spoons and grain storage to the highest level of honor and chivalry by becoming a Kingsguard is beyond impressive. He is certainly one of if not the only person in Targaryen dynasty history to be born at such low stature to rise as high as he did as quickly. Only for that honor to be destroyed by the very same people he should have been able to trust the most. Then he takes on the role of helping to train Aegon and Aemond to be competent swordsman is extremely honorable especially since Viserys is incapable of making men of Alicent’s children.

I'll always be team Rhaenyra. They literally put her in an impossible situation marrying her to a clearly gay man like atp he's not even trying to hide it. Targaryens rule the seven kingdoms not Velaryons so it doesn't even make sense to me why it matters her kids are still Targaryens by blood. That's a fine argument against the way the world is in this universe but it doesn't detract from the fact that she's causing strife in the kingdom through her decisions. Her dad went out on a limb (to put it mildly) for her and she's done nothing to help him. People act like Otto is wrong because they don't think he should be right by what he says but in the universe he is dead on and Rhaenyra should be aware of this fact and position herself accordingly, to which she has abjectly failed up until this point. She's not remotely a bad person, just a bad player (as are many others around her) at the Game.

Idk anything about the books but it seems to me in the show that Laenors parents are the only ones who trully knew he was gay, and it was speculation on Rhaenyras part. I'm assuming Viserys didn't know, but he's the one (along with Laenor's parents) whos responsible for their marriage. Regardless of any bad decisions leading up to or after their marriage, that ones not on her, and they were simply wed out of duty regardless.

@James Meh, I definitely don't think the way they went about it was smart at all, but if she was to be the heir to the throne then she's definitely expected to produce heirs to succeed her as well. If there was truly no way that her and Laenor could have any kids together, then its kind of to be expected + that seems to have fallen under their agreement as a side effect as well. The point I’m trying to make is that it is unfair that the children are only whatever their father is because they live in a patriarchal society. You’re correct, in their world they are “Strongs” and “Valeryones” because it goes through the father, but just because something is law does not mean it is fair, which is what we the audience are supposed to understand. The actors and producers speak about this. The women of GOT are women who are used, abused, manipulated, and undermined because they are deemed less valuable solely because they are women. (Both Rhaenyra and Alicent) They are seen as tools to breed more men and not much else. If women had equal value to men in their world, and if the medieval concept of a “bastard” did not exist, Rhaenyra’s children would be seen as Targaryens just as much as anything else. We’re not meant to see Rhaenyra as perfect, but we the audience are supposed to recognize this power imbalance between men and women. I feel this is something that deeply effects Alicent, so to me it is no surprise that she has clung onto whatever sense of control she can, like her children and her husband and “decency”, “duty” and “honor”. I believe that is her way of accepting her circumstances and making the best of what she feels is her “duty”. She was not afforded any choices in the matter. Of course she is bitter. If she ever had any real choice in her life, she would not be in this situation. Actually it were a fairer world, Alicent and Rhaenyra would have been able to love each other in a romantic way and none of this would even be happening LOL. But that is just another choice not given to them.

@ James, i mean we do get that scene in ep 4 of the play in king’s landing about the succession, but whether the common people and lords take issue with rhaenyra being heir wasn’t the point i was trying to make. i don’t think no one cares, but quite frankly i don’t think their opinions matter much compared to the people in power (ie: dragon riders). i think the show runners focus on the hightower’s opposition more because their’s is kind of the only one of any consequence to the throne with alicent being the mother of rhaenyra’s only competition

That's probably true when it comes to the sympathy fact, but the chemistry thing is a matter of perception. First time I saw them exchange eye contact, be it with the previous actress or this one, I knew I liked the vibe they had going. Overall though, I felt like the timeskip was a bit rushed. One more episode between the last and this one would've helped in fleshing out the current dynamic some more.

They may both have people that can be seen as heroic but there's very few in GOT who don't make serious mistakes or just outright awful decisions that seem to ruin everything and you're just forced to deal with it because that's life. I really only agree with Jack. Also I don't think Daemon is so much "lost" as just tired of his own brother constantly trusting everyone else over him. I do think he's genuinely been hurt by Viserys' choices to cast him out again and again. I don't really believe he had ambitions towards the throne, more so just wanting to keep the Targaryens in power and keep the bloodlines pure (I still think Vizzy should have just wed Rhaenyra and Daemon or at least keep Daemon in the small council). Now he has 3 dragons in his own family and he really seemed to care about Laena and his daughters I think. The thing is if, his so to speak, "old family" doesn't think they need him, why would he aid them? He's content with living a lavish lifestyle elsewhere as long as no other family (in name) acends the iron throne. Also, I believe the Valeryons in the books description were not people of color, like the actors which is why the question of Rhaenyra's children's birthright were really just rumors that people didn't have any hard evidence over, giving that the excuse is they got their dark hair from their grandmother, Princess Rhaenys.

The reason Aemond doesn't have a dragon is because it's Targaryen tradition to put a dragon egg in a Targaryen baby's cradle/ pick out an egg for the baby that way the Targaryen and dragon are born roughly around the same time which strengthens a bond and they get to bond as infants as well and it grows stronger throughout the years. In Aemond's case, his dragon egg never hatched so he was left without one. It's harder to bond with and tame a dragon already born let alone a full grown one, but not completely impossible. After all, Viserys managed to bond to Balerion.

I’m team Rhaenyra and I was still frustrated with her on my initial watch. She made some questionable decisions. I’ll share my thoughts on Alicent later lol. I initially missed the younger characters but the older ones definitely take the cake for me. I liked the shift. I feel like you could sense the tension of the characters better from the 10 years that passed.

I definitely see yours guys side on how this was your least favorite episode due to the change of actors to certain characters and the huge time skip. As for Rhaenyra's character, I would go far to say she is a very complicated and yet complex one. At first we root for her due to her position as heir to the Iron throne and that although she is woman, she still could become a great queen to the realm. Then she starts to make some not so great decisions that advertently affect her position and that of her family's status to where we question why she did so. Knowing that the lords of the realms views of a woman becoming queen is not good for the realm due to her gender and a woman's nature is unpredictable, we still see how it is unfair since she is criticized for what men does normally at that time so why is she bearing all the blunder where men does not suffer consequences at all. At least that's how I take her character and feel free to disagree on this but I think there is more to be seen and done with Rhaenyra as she tries and fights to keep her claim to the throne while others try to strip her from her claim.

Male genes are literally more dominant its scientific fact… Most children look more like the father rather than the mother because males carry more dominant allele’s. In the case of GOT and HOTD I didnt know genetics were different than real life biology so I appologize for that. I had been under the impression that everything was the same just that white hair was something new but likely akin to blonde hair👍🏻

If I had to guess, I would say that the white hair is a dominant gene only in Targaryen / Velaryon men. It would make sense since Viserys' children have white hair despite having a mother without. I feel you guys were a bit harsh on Rhaenyra. It is clear they live in a world where nobody (especially the heir) can love who they want. They had no choice. Laenor is into men, so it's no surprise that they both found ways to be happy. Alicent is clearly emotionally abusive to her children and is obsessed with Rhaenyra's "mistakes". Seems like she feels it's something in her life she can control. We saw her tell Aaegon that he should/will be king, even after he seemed indifferent to Rhaenyra being heir (he literally said 'So?'). She encourages her children to be hateful to Rhaenyra's children and believe that their sister (R) will want them dead one day. Even referring to them as "savages" when speaking to King Viserys. But I mean... demanding the newborn be brought to her at once just so she can see if it is another bastard? It all seems a bit much. She is becoming like her father, it's clear she wishes for Rhaenyra's downfall, she's got it out for her, when all Rhaenyra did was love someone else who wasn't her obviously gay husband LOL. Its legit because black/brown hair is a dominant gene. Blonde hair is recessive. The only difference is that male hair gene is more dominant so if the mother has black hair and the dad white hair it becomes 50/50 vs where if it was mother white hair and dad black hair it becomes 25/75. Doing a simple allele chart will tell you how this works. Its standard biology.

Rhaenyra isn't dumb, I just feel like you guys don't understand the situation. Plus, in the books, it wasn't as obvious because of who Leanor's mother is. So, the show made a little change that made the question of her children's parentage even more noticeable. Also, I feel next episode you will have more information, and can reevaluate your responses to the entire thing.

Ok she's not perfect, she was being spoiled having been given successorship like NO woman ever before, especially once a first-born son was produced, that's a huge deal. She denied marriage until her dad's hand was forced and it was to a guy who couldn't create heirs which is causing so many of their problems. Meanwhile although her dad didn't make the most pragmatic decisions, he did marry the daughter of his hand, from a very close family to them with history. The whole point of the show (so far, not alluding to any particular spoilers) is how no one's perfect and we all have our human flaws, if anybody is insistent that any character is perfect or innocent is just playing favorites.

no. the genes of the first men are stronger than Targaryen genes but Targaryen genes are stronger than that of the andals. Hightower is andal and Strong is first men. Orys Baratheon had a Targaryen father but his mother descended from the first men and therefore got brunette hair.

for context, Rhaenys had black hair (she was half Baratheon) in the book but for some reason they made her have white Targaryen hair in the show. It wasn’t as black and white as it is in the show. Also, I believe Laenor was never able to bed Rhaeneyra. He always claimed them as his sons. Little disappointed how you guys are labeling her so soon without much information

I'm surprised by the Rhaenyra hate. She's the one being used by everyone. She was made heir to the iron throne by her father, it's immediately contested by her father and her best friend's children, used by her uncle which completely altered her relationship with him, she's forced to marry a man who doesn't desire women and can't give her children, has to hide the truth about her childrens' real father, and the queen (her old friend who's the wife of her father) is trying to erase her claim. All Rhaenyra wanted to do since the beginning of the show was fly around the world and be free. Everybody in the show has used her and she just takes it on the chin.

1. Viserys knows, he just won't aknowledge it. He had that same energy when there was a rumour about Rhaenyra and Daemon. He backed her up like crazy but still sent her the tea. 2. I'm not sure why anyone would feel bad for Leanor. Sure, his first lover died 10 years ago, but he's been living the life and has simply been unmable to get Rhaenyra pregnant. People simply aren't as aware of the fact that he has multiple lovers because it's not like he can get himself or them pregnant. Sure, Rhaenyra should've stopped sleeping with her knight after her firstborn, at least until she got pregnant by Leanor, but given that it hasn't happened once in 10 years... 3. The way I understand it, some houses have strong bloodlines and it is shown through the hair color of their children. House Strong's genes are stronger than that of Hightower. That's how Alicent's kids have white hair while Rhaenyra's don't. 4. Dragonstone is the original home of the Targaryens. Staying would allow her to keep some form of control over her own succession, but she can indeed just leave if she likes.

Rhaenyra tried doing her duty but Laenor being the way he is, it was probably difficult for them to conceive a child, they did try...it's not like they didn't try doing their duty. And Rhaenyra needs heirs to strengthen her claim whether it be through Laenor's children or someone elses, she needs heirs. It's just a shit situation both Rhaenyra and Laenor are in. Also, i dont understand why her kids are considered "bastards" if they will rule through the targaryen name and they get their targaryen name and blood from Rhaneyra their mother, not their father..and Rhaneyra is their mother.

All of Alicent’s kids have white hair and Raenayra’s have black hair. The male hair gene is more dominant so normally kids will have the hair of their father. Thats why its so easy for people to tell Raenayra is having an affair.
