A little more, Oda Nobunaga was all set to become Shogun but it's uncertain whether he would have become. A Taiko was placed after his death. I mentioned before, to become /Shogun/ you need lineage and currently only Minowara clan have that (Toranaga).

Dropping another history nugget. Feel free to upvote if you guys think it's useful. History-wise, Oda Nobunaga (needs no introduction) was assassinated by Akechi Mitsuhide not long before the Council of Regents. Part of the reason the Taiko (same as in the show) came to power was because of this event. It was a betrayal that brought shame to Japan. Look out for these names... there are characters mentioned that have the same first name. It might help to explain Mariko's family *situation* B)

This show isn't fast paced action, but slow cooking. Not that I have to say anything, looks like you're all already engrossed in the long scenes of conversation anyway. This show I'd say is half politics and half cultural exchange, and very well done on both fronts.

The natto scene was one of the many examples of this show using it's script in such a refreshing nuanced way to tell us so much about the characters and the story without saying a single word. Natto is well known to be a uniquely Japanese dish that is famously hated by even many native Japanese people because of its strong unique taste. So, John eating, enjoying and accepting the dish is meant to show us the viewer how he is slowly coming to accept and grow into Japanese culture and way of life. This whole episode we are being shown him being taught how to understand and respect their ways, from not walking on moss in the garden because another person's whole job is to tend to the garden, to Mariko explaining the concept of the eight fold fence which is such a poetic, beautiful way to illustrate how subtle small things can have deep meaning in Japanese culture and how his own perspective on life in their land isn't necessarily correct. Their harsh environment with regular frequent earthquakes, tsunamis and raging fires perhaps made them look at the worth of human life differently than people in other places in the world, since they might have gotten more used to loss of human life with it being that much more fleeting, easier lost to random chance in their land. So John's perspective is being challenged in many ways. Fuji giving John her family swords hit me in the gut so hard I cant even describe how much pain I felt there. That gesture was so unbelievably unimaginable to me. For her to give the last thing she has to remember her deceased family by to a former barbarian, to a basically total stranger... just wrap your head around the amount of kindness and heart that girl must possess. She may actually be my favorite character in the whole show. And the hot springs scene... oh man. That might be one of my favorite scenes in a very long time in any show ever. He literally took her on a date in that scene. He painted such a freeing picture in her imagination which gave her oh so much needed escape from her own tragic circumstance that you don't even know about. It is so sad. But you will learn more later. I loved it so much.

BTW, this has nothing to do with Shogun, but how are you guys withstanding Brig's thigh slap?? I was always in shock every time Brig slap Mckay or Carter because it makes such a sharp sounds so today I tried it to myself to see if they are actually in pain or not. It hurts so much lol
