Lost Rain

I had a several paragraph long response typed out, but then swapped tabs to look something up and it all got deleted -_- I think this was basically everything again? Entrances can basically be split into two kinds: large and small. Most small ones are left unguarded, most of the time thanks to not knowing they’re there. The elevator shaft fits into this category. The larger ones, such as the Jade Fang’s, are almost all guarded by various factions or gangs. The reasoning is pretty simple. Most creatures in the Underground are large. There are some smaller ones here and there, like baseline ghouls, but they have other restrictions on them. For instance, ghouls are basically entirely reaction and instinct based, so if there’s no stimulus they’ll basically just sit around. Mutant ghouls like the one Mira and Shiro faced are an outlier. Thanks to the unknown nature of many of the smaller entrances, most Mercs or varied parties who descend down into the depths do so through the larger, guarded entrances. This makes it so that the large entrances are gathering points for monsters since it’s where ‘food’ comes down from. The caveat for this, in the case of the Fangs, is if kill squads are sent down through the Underground on occasion. It hasn’t been explicitly said, though I have hinted at it somewhat that Jade Fang squads occasionally descend into the depths to kill the gathered creatures. This is the reason Shiro and Mira were largely uncontested. All of that works out so that most of the smaller entrances are unguarded and the things Underground leave them alone mostly since there’s no reason to be around them. I hope all that made sense…

I checked back and found the first mentions in Ch.23-24, and it does not mention anything about entrances other than the one Jade Fang entrance, so that is on me. The purpose for guarding them is obvious, but even more so, it means to be able to enter the Underground from almost anywhere after a heist, Shiro would need a lot of unguarded entrances all over the city, to be able to move her loot without unwanted attention. A lot of unguarded entrances, that at the same time are not regularly used by anything from the Underground.

Oh my bad, guess I didn't pick up on her walking an extra building away

I’ll clean it up a bit to make sense, but imagine “I” is an alley and “O”is a building. Its set up like this: OIOOOIO Where the very middle “O” is where Shiro wants into.

Gardor

"the apartment building was sandwiched tightly between two buildings, so there wasn’t even an alley I could try to take advantage of. " "shifted my attention to the alleyways. Both of them were absolutely filthy, and the one to the right of my mark was inaccessible due to a collapsed fire escape. The other alley, in a similar state of trash buildup and filth, got around the whole fire escape collapsing due to age by simply not having one." "The roof of the building connected directly to the one I wanted into, so once I felt calmed down enough, I simply walked over and hopped the retainer wall." I think there are some contradictory descriptions about whether or not there could be alleyways between the two buildings. "The edge of the room was within reach"-> roof

Okay, I reread back through several chapters to find the first mentions of the Underground. I couldn’t quite remember exactly what I said back then, though best I can tell I still have the same mindset about it. The Underground is extremely dangerous, and is a breeding ground for all sorts of nasties. Tha Jade Fangs have a large entrance right next to Ichiban street, there primary income point. What would happen if, say, a mutant or monster crawled up onto the surface and worked its way into Ichiban street uncontested? Or if a rival gang used the Underground to move undetected to the heart of the Fang’s operation? That’s why they have it guarded. Shiro needed the fangs permission because it was the only entrance into the Underground she knew about. Shiro also lacked knowledge on the whole Underground in general, so to her, there were only a few viable entrances.

"Oh, and I could enter the Underground from almost anywhere in the city, so I could just disappear after a heist. " Wait... maybe I got something wrong, but was not a major point in one of the earlier chapters that there are actually only a few viable entrances to the Underground, and most of them guarded against what might come from below? Something about the Jade Dragons only having one in their territory, which is why Shiro needed the gang's permission to use it when she headed down with Mira?
