Woah, woah, woah. Did you just drop a tease in the author note that Uldar was one of the other two students to become an archwizard before graduating? Someone else in the comments reminded us of Hobb recognizing the energy of the dungeon cores. And Uldar traveled the world over in search of knowledge and power. Is that what that’s supposed to mean?

I'm wondering if Hobbs was hinting at what he sensed when he visited Thamland... That "familiar " taste on the air that Hobbs noticed probably gave him a clue which he is now obliquely sharing with Alex.

The power levels are getting really high now. How will Mr/Ms Clarke keep the story moving without getting ludicrous, like some novels do? Can't wait.

mant06

Imagine if Jules had said "raising corpses is just so last year".

Red Armadillo

Not so sure it's shackles, might be more of now that he's that powerful he'll be of interest to new levels of beings that would have ignored him previously

Allastin

Oooh, perhaps there are shackles that comes with great power. A certain responsibility one could say 😆. Anyways, not upsetting certain cosmic forces seems like a good idea to me.

AetherBoye

I could see Alex casting some 12th tier Roth's Avatar type shit to kill a god-empowered ravener

TwoMoreYears

Such a fun chapter, and I hope it’s one of many that brings back characters in Generasi. I would love Alex to learn that 8th tier force golem spell for example and finally set things right with the only professor he didn’t hit off with, especially given his love for force ball. I also appreciate you answering a question I was thinking about earlier, how many people at the school can even cast a ninth tier. Knowing not even a faculty member can do it really puts it into perspective.

Well Baelin very specifically is immortal. Like whenever it has come up my first thought is "Goat Wizard Vandal Savage", since the hints he has given is that when he was a young man it was basically pre-history. As for other wizards and immortality, that seems like something that has to be actively pursued and is a rather complex and difficult feat of wizardry with applications of spellcraft that needs extensive work in several different fields of wizardry. They may simply not have had access to the teachings required, especially if they hung around Thameland instead of heading to a grand locus of knowledge like Wizard-opolis.

Shelbo

I like to think of Hobb’s voice to be like Brandon Lee mulligan

Greymantle

This discussion of wizards at the highest levels of power makes me wonder about the following: I gather once you get to a sufficiently high power as a wizard, you become essentially immortal (as in you don’t age, not that you can’t be killed), like Baelin and the other members of his cabal. Given that the Sage, Chosen, and General* Marks all enable exceptional wizarding ability, why don’t we see ageless super-powerful Heroes from previous cycles coming to Thamelin’s aid? It seems many of those who survived their initial cycle should have the ability to achieve such heights. Indeed, why haven’t we seen even one? The closest is the First Apostle, who is a quasi-immortal former Chosen, but he filled the role of antagonist, and had only been alive hundreds (as opposed to thousands) of years. [*Yes, I know the General Mark wasn’t restored until this cycle, but there were numerous earlier cycles where the General Mark was bestowed.] Sure, the plot wouldn’t work if there were even one past Hero, akin to Baelin in power, that was able to come to Thamelin’s aid each cycle. But I'd like to hear an in-universe explanation for why we don’t see any.

Decide

I wonder who the other early arch wizards are, and what spells Alex will get. Bet he’ll get that tornado spell Baelin uses. And what about that talk with Ram?

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

Decide

It’s probably the magic version of enlightenment. 9th tier is probably a mortal limit that is overcome by redefining the sense of self the caster has. Bend the world or the world will bend you.

Jeff Chinn

Was excited for this chapter and wasn't disappointed

Jamarr

Eh, I'm not worried. Alex isn't unaware of his achievements, he showed he knew how to speak his own praises and stand his ground when he summoned the Greater War Demon. Unless Hobb is talking about something else.

Trevor Mergen

Thanks
